Paddle the upper reaches of the River Thames - the longest river situated wholly in England. Over two days, we’ll explore some of its quieter stretches, winding through open countryside before camping on one of its 80 islands.
The Thames carries a rich history, and you’ll see traces of it as we follow its gentle meanders. Among the most striking is the string of pillboxes, part of the GHQ Stop Line built during World War II. These hidden remnants sit quietly along the banks, adding a unique layer to the journey.
There’s plenty of nature here too, with stretches of river that feel surprisingly remote - far removed from the Thames most people picture.
We’ll set the journey up as two ‘day trips’, so you won’t need to carry your kit on your board unless you want to. Instead, you can focus on your paddling while using the river as a real environment to build confidence, refine your skills, and settle into the rhythm of travelling by water.

River Thames
Starting in Lechlade, heading towards Oxford.
Day 1 - Saturday
We'll meet at the start point for the trip at 9:30am. We’ll have a chat about the weekend, get to know each other and check we have all our equipment, before heading to the start point. We'll sort kit, pump up boards, and run a shuttle to the campsite, before getting onto the water. We'll paddle for around 4-5 hours including snack stops and photo opportunities, before arriving at our campsite for the night. We'll set up camp, before having dinner - either at a local pub or restaurant, or cooking on stoves.
Day 2 - Sunday
We’ll pack up camp and run a quick shuttle to the end point before getting onto the water. We'll paddle for around 4-5 hours to our end point. We’ll wrap up the day with a chat (and maybe a drink and lunch!), before heading home.
You will need to get yourself to the start point.
This journey is point to point and does not return to our start point, so we will organise a shuttle from the end point back to the campsite.
Our accommodation will be camping on campsites. There are toilets and showers available.
You will need to bring lunches for both days. Dinner on Saturday will be in a pub (note, you will need to pay for your own meal).
Breakfast on Sunday will be provided.
This trip is suitable for both beginners getting onto a river for the first time, or seasoned paddlers looking for a new adventure! You'll need some fitness and a positive attitude!
